The Dr. Paul Evans Research Prize in Canada–Asia Relations Policy has been made available through a gift from Dr. Paul Evans and Catherine Evans. Two prizes of $7,500 each will be awarded annually for outstanding graduate students engaged in policy-related research on Canada–Asia relations. Eligible students will have written an exceptional paper and pursued activities that contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of Canada–Asia relations in both Canadian and global contexts.
Dr. Evans is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, specializing in Asian and trans-Pacific international relations. He has held academic and leadership roles at institutions across Canada, the U.S., and Asia, including York University, Harvard, UBC, National University of Singapore and the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Evans established this prize with the hope of advancing study in the field and to support UBC’s ongoing visibility and engagement in Asia Pacific-focused research.

Eligibility and Selection
To be eligible for this award, you must be a current UBC graduate student that has written an exceptional paper and pursued activities that contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of Canada–Asia relations in both Canadian and global contexts.
Nominations are reviewed and successful candidates are selected by the Directors of the Institute of Asian Research, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Application Process

- The online form will request applicants to submit the following:
- Your name, email, UBC department/program of study, current year of study
- A statement (max 1,000 words) briefly outlining how your personal, academic, and/or professional activities have contributed to a broader and deeper understanding of Canada-Asia Relations.
- A relevant paper that demonstrates your contribution to broader and deeper understanding of Canada-Asia relations
- A recent academic transcript from UBC
- An updated CV (PDF)
- Name and email of UBC faculty nominator
- Your UBC faculty nominator must complete and submit a faculty nomination form directly to the Institute of Asian Research by the April 2nd deadline.
