DESCRIPTION

The Institute of Asian Research is seeking applications from within the University for the post of Director of the Centre for Chinese Research, in tandem with the Chevalier Chair that supports the research and scholarly and community engagement activities of the Director. Applicants should hold an academic appointment at UBC and have demonstrated commitment to research on China and/or the Chinese world and public/institutional engagement related to China and the Chinese world. The successful applicant will be expected to take up the appointment on July 1, 2020.

 

The Centre’s primary function is to act as an interdisciplinary hub for research and public engagement related to China and the Chinese world; the successful candidate will pursue an active program of activity in support of this mandate. Duties of the Director will include the development or fostering of research programs focusing on China and the Chinese world; engagement with faculty and students across the University; partnerships with scholarly and community organizations in support of scholarly engagement with China and the Chinese world; building of relationships with institutions in China and the Chinese world; pursuit of funding from external donors for the programs of the Centre; the organization of a series of seminars and/or conferences in collaboration with faculty engaged in research on China and the Chinese world on campus; administration of the budget of the Centre; and chairing of the Centre’s Executive Committee.¬† The Centre Director will be expected to collaborate with the Director of the Institute of Asian Research in developing inter-centre and interdisciplinary teaching and research initiatives. The Centre Director will also serve on the Council of the Institute. The Chevalier Chair, which accompanies the Directorship, provides research support and a one-course teaching release per year.
