“Take every opportunity to build relationships with people, whether it’s going to networking events, professional events, student events, because… you never know where a relationship is going to take you. A lot of people don’t put up their hands for public office… to them I would say believe in yourself… you have something to offer the world.”
Vancouver City Councillors Mike Klassen, Lisa Dominato, and Lenny Zhou joined SPPGA Prof. Max Cameron for an engaging discussion on the realities of civic leadership, navigating turbulent political climates, and the foundational experiences that shaped their careers.
As UBC alumni, the trio shed light on their transition from academia to public service and how the practice of critical-thinking remains a vital aspect of their work. Students considering this path were encouraged to get involved in student politics, make connections, learn languages and practice the art of authentic listening – a necessity for representing a city as diverse as Vancouver.
