Liu Scholar Ashli Akins is excited to announce a project she has been working on as part of her PhD at UBC, supervised by Professor Wade Davis and Professor Kai Chan, in collaboration with Steve DeRoy, The Firelight Group, Mosqoy, and Casita Huaran. They are hosting the very first Latin American edition of Firelight’s world-renowned Indigenous Mapping Workshop.

“MAPPING CUSCO’S TEXTILE REVITALIZATION MOVEMENT” will use maps as a tool to unite weavers and leaders of the movement; to shift power back into the hands of community members to tell their own stories about the tradition; and to facilitate more direct access between consumers and producers. One of many outcomes from this workshop will be a retail map of the region, directing travellers and consumers to where they can buy authentic, fair-trade textiles to actually support the tradition in a positive way.

“CREANDO MAPAS PARA EL MOVIMIENTO DE REVITALIZACIÓN TEXTIL DEL CUSCO” promoverá el uso de mapas como una herramienta con el objetivo de unir tejedor@s y lideres del movimiento; para que los comuneros tengan en sus manos el poder de contar sus propias historias sobre la tradición; y para facilitar la relación e interacción entre consumidores y productores.
Uno de los resultados va a ser un mapa de los vendedores de tejidos en la región Cusco, guiando a viajeros y consumidores hacia lugares donde puedan comprar tejidos auténticos, de comercio justo, hecho a mano, y así apoyar la tradición en una manera positiva.
