New CARE course ‘Global Climate Action: Policies & Practices’ offered by UBC’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.
The course will be by application. Interested students can apply here
This global course, designed by the CARE consortium (SciencesPo, U of Toronto, U of Guelph, UBC), provides graduate students with the knowledge, tools, and frameworks to navigate global climate action in an increasingly fragmented world. Focusing on both international policy frameworks and bottom-up initiatives from cities, Indigenous communities, and the private sector, the course offers practical insights into policy design, financing mechanisms, and local adaptation strategies. Students will explore how multi-level governance, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration are reshaping the climate landscape, preparing them to drive impactful change across diverse contexts. The course is aimed at graduate students interested in environmental and sustainability issues, and effective climate communication and engagement. Students need not have a strong background in climate policy but should bring enthusiasm and curiosity in how best to move the needle on the climate crisis across all scales of governance.
The course consists of two streams: (1) A series of guest lectures delivered in a hybrid format, synchronously across the CARE member institutions, supported by topical background readings and discussion, and (2) a suite of projects designed to level up your abilities to engage in climate communication with diverse audiences, with in-person lecture and discussion among the UBC student cohort of the course.
