Julia G. Bentley is a career diplomat whose work has focused chiefly on Asia. This has given her a broad overview of the context in which Canadian foreign policy is formulated, advocated and implemented. She has held a variety of senior positions at Global Affairs Canada related to East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Her responsibilities have encompassed foreign policy, security, international trade and development cooperation. Her diplomatic assignments have included China (twice), Taiwan, India most recently, as Canada’s High Commissioner in Malaysia, during a turbulent time in domestic politics, amplified by the pandemic.

Julia’s professional experience also includes heading an international organization in China and managing a capacity building program for three years, supporting Chinese non-governmental organizations, while on leave from the foreign service.

Cumulatively, she has worked in Asia for a total of 22 years.

Prior to joining the Canadian foreign service, she worked inter alia in international relations for the Ontario government and at the Canada ASEAN Centre in Singapore, which provided an exceptional vantage point on Canada’s engagement in Southeast Asia.
