Julia Gabriele Harten is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) and a Faculty Associate at the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. She holds a PhD in Public Policy from the University of Southern California as well as degrees in Business Administration, Economics, and China and East Asian studies from Münster University, Goethe University Frankfurt, and the Free University of Berlin. In her work she focuses on housing and socio-spatial exclusion with an area focus on China and North America.

Her work has been published in the Journal of the American Planning Association, Urban Studies, and the Journal of Planning Education and Research. In addition to her roles at SCARP and SPPGA, she is an elected board member of the International Association of China Planning, a guest researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Center for Housing and Urban-Rural Development, a research member of the Housing Research Collaborative and a research associate of the Canadian Housing Evidence Collaborative.
