UBC professor Nadja Kunz (R) teaches water and plant sampling techniques to the student participants and discusses the impacts of mining and exploration.
Assistant Professor Nadja Kunz, Canada Research Chair in Mine Water Management and Stewardship (UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering), is featured in a new story in the UBC Trek magazine about sustainable development on Tahltan First Nation land.
A new program features adventure hikes for Tahltan youth that show them the importance of their traditions and includes educational components. Professor Kunz shares: “I’m interested in the social and environmental issues around mining,” she says, “as well as the engineering challenges. Participating in the hike was a great way to involve the students in the physical aspects of mining development, but also in how that development impacts the land.”
During the hike, Professor Kunz brought water sampling equipment and taught water and plant sampling techniques to the student participants while discussing the impacts of mining and exploration.
