Elena Gordillo Fuertes

MPPGA Student, Class of 2024

About

Elena has recently graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA honours degree in Geography. She brings a particularly strong understanding of critical geopolitics, migration studies and social justice issues to the MPPGA. She explored these areas in-depth for her undergraduate thesis on the implementation of European migration policy in the Canary Islands during the Covid-19 pandemic. Elena is a local of the Canary Islands, Spain, where she had the privilege of collaborating with the local branch of the Spanish Red Cross on the Humanitarian Assistance to Immigrants programme throughout her research. Her first-hand observations of the disorganized implementation of migration policy against irregular maritime migration in the archipelago and the consequent violations of basic human rights have driven her interest in just and effective public policy. She has collaborated with non-profit education organizations in Morocco and Ghana, where she simultaneously undertook extensive human rights training. During her time at Oxford, Elena worked as a sustainability consultant for the leading UK student-powered environmental think tank Six Degrees, producing reports on trade policy and climate financing for international organizations. Ultimately, she is confident that through the MPPGA she will be able to fulfil her commitment to devising effective and inclusive policy strategies that lessen the pressures on authority, ease tensions amongst citizens, and respect the fundamental human rights of individuals.
