Prof. Timothy Cheek has been named a 2023 Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in the Academy of Arts and Humanities. Recognizing Canada’s leading intellectuals, the RSC administers awards for outstanding scholarly achievements that have had profound impact on the academic landscape. Cheek is one of ten UBC faculty members that have been announced as new Fellows and Members.
“Historian Timothy Cheek commands international attention for his field-changing research into modern Chinese intellectuals and the Chinese Communist Party. His global stature attests to first-rate scholarship characterized by a singular ability to make connections across disciplines and continents. Cheek’s prodigious research, manifest in works like The Intellectual in Modern Chinese History, has bridged China’s past and present, international scholarly communities, and the spheres of academia and public policy.”
A professor with the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) and Department of History, Louis Cha Chair in Chinese Research, and former Director of the Institute of Asian Research (IAR), Timothy Cheek currently serves as the director of the Centre for Chinese Research (CCR).
The RSC states: “In sum, Cheek has done more than virtually any other scholar worldwide to bring history to bear on contemporary Chinese politics, and to interpret current Chinese politics through the lens of history. He has created new models of collaborative translation that have deepened historical understanding. And he has developed key concepts—’establishment intellectuals’ and the ‘historical Mao’—which frame current knowledge of modern China in the international scholarly community, in policy circles, and among the broader public.”
He will be inducted as a new RSC Fellow on November 17, 2023 in Waterloo, Ontario. Congratulations to Prof. Timothy Cheek on this well-deserved honour!
