“I’m particularly honoured by this invitation to the Royal Society of Canada because it is a recognition of the importance of interdisciplinarity. It represents a wonderful opportunity to interact with and learn from extraordinary researchers across Canada.”
Professor, SPPGA/History

Congratulations to Professor Heidi Tworek, one of five UBC Arts professors announced today by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as new Fellows and Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists.

Dr. Tworek is Canada Research Chair (Tier II), Professor in the Department of History and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, and director of the Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Her work examines history and policy around communications, particularly the effects of new media technologies on democracy. She is a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation as well as a non-resident fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Canadian Global Affairs Institute.

In recent years, Tworek has increasingly turned to a problem-oriented interdisciplinary approach to her research, providing intersectional perspectives on a wide range of subjects, including health, democracy, and online abuse.

“I’m particularly honoured by this invitation to the Royal Society of Canada because it is a recognition of the importance of interdisciplinarity,” she says. “It represents a wonderful opportunity to interact with and learn from extraordinary researchers across Canada. I hope it will open up new research cooperations across disciplines.”

Across UBC, a total of fifteen faculty members have been named fellows and members in the Royal Society of Canada Class of 2024.
