Tommy Koh, MPPGA student and a Graduate Student Researcher at UBC’s Institute of Asian Research, presented a paper at the 7th Southeast Asian Studies Symposium held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 22nd to 24th March 2018. The symposium is the world’s largest annual conference on Southeast Asia and is organized by Project Southeast Asia at the University of Oxford. In 2018, the symposium “What is Southeast Asia? Exploring Uniqueness and Diversity”, was held at Universitas Indonesia.
Tommy is co-authoring his paper with Anne-Marie Dahms, a third-year UBC student in the International Relations program. Titled “Borders as Barriers: Sustained Policy Effects of Transient Efforts to Reclaim the Nation-State in Southeast Asia”, both authors examine how shifting policy climates paired with the lack of policy responsiveness creates sticky conditions where policies become political liabilities.
At the symposium, Tommy acted as organizer and discussant of the panel “Not Your Place: Understanding Contested Boundaries in Southeast Asia”. The panel sought to provide insight into how contested boundaries are responded to within different domains. Apart from Tommy’s work, it included papers in the disciplines of economics and urban planning presented by Jervan Khou (University of Tokyo) and Nyang Bing Lin (Yale-NUS College).
