This symposium seeks to gather local students and scholars of urban Asias to celebrate the past, present, and future of Asian urban and community studies at the University of British Columbia. Professor Abidin Kusno from York University, renowned cultural historian and urban studies scholar of Jakarta, will deliver the keynote lecture on his latest book Jakarta: The City of a Thousand Dimensions (NUS Press, 2023). Three Institute of Asia Research fellows will present ongoing research and lead roundtable discussions on urban Asias in various parts of the region and North America.
We invite you to join this community conversation to share your own work, reflect upon the day’s events, and chart new possible futures for the study of urban Asias at UBC. All are welcome, and lunch will be served along with coffee and pastries throughout the day.
