Dr. Bhaskar Chakrabarti will grace CISAR with his presence to present his research on Bhutan, a relatively mysterious and unique nation within South Asia. Bhaskar Chakrabarti is a Professor of Public Policy & Management at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta works in the area of local democracy, environment, and everyday politics. Bhutan oscillates between the twin notions of cultural preservation and calibrated change. The latter involves a set of transitional challenges where old socio-political coordinates based on all-encompassing Buddhism is paving way for the new types of egalitarian aspirations that democracy necessarily brings in.
The implications of these changes in terms of governance-challenges are analysed, along with the nexus of organisational arrangements in Bhutanese polity, particularly the interface of religious and administrative structures. This is an ongoing study where the following researchers are involved: Bhaskar Chakrabarti and Manish Thakur from the Public Policy and Management Group, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, and Jit Tshering from the Department of Research and Consultancy, Royal Institute of Management, Thimphu. This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
