About the talk
This talk will provide an introduction to the field of the commercial determinants of health and the concept of corporate political activity. Industry influence of youth education will be explored as a form of corporate political activity through a number of case studies. Implications for public health research and practice will be discussed.
About the speaker
Dr. van Schalkwyk is a public health physician and researcher working at the University of Edinburgh. Her research aims to study how commercial actors influence ideas, knowledge, science and policymaking. She publishes research on the tobacco, alcohol, gambling, fossil fuels, opioid, pesticide and firearm industries, including on the activities of industry-funded organisations, influence of youth education and safety programmes, and the use of metaphor as corporate political activity.
