The book views modern Chinese Political history from the perspective of Han officials who goverened Xinjiang. ‘This region, inhabited by Uighurs, Kazaks, Hui, Mongols, Kirgiz, and Tajiks, is also the last significant “colony” of the former Qing empire to remain under continuous Chinese rule throughout the twentieth century. Jacob’s narrative tracks Xingjiang Officials after 1949 and reconceptualising the moden Chinese state as a “national empire.”

About the Author:

Justin M. Jacobs is assistant professor of history at the American University in Washington, DC. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle, and his Ph.D. in modern Chinese history from the University of California, San Diego.
