Project Title: Applying an Equity Lens to British Columbia Decarbonization Policies: Potential Impacts on Residential Sector Energy Access and Affordability
Client: Ecotrust Canada
Students: Juan Cristobal Collado, Kelly Chang, Lam Fung Liu, Mohini Singh
Faculty Lead: David Boyd
Fieldwork Location: British Columbia
Year: 2024-25
About the Project: This project aims to develop policy solutions that enhance energy access and affordability for vulnerable populations as British Columbia decarbonizes its energy supply. Existing governmental programs designed to assist consumers have shown limited effectiveness in reducing energy poverty and mitigating climate risks. To bridge this gap, our research will identify equity gaps in existing and proposed supply-side policies affecting the residential sector, particularly for vulnerable households. Through stakeholder interviews, jurisdictional scans, and a literature review, we will assess challenges and innovative solutions from other regions to inform relevant policy recommendations for British Columbia.
