Founded in 1992, the Centre for Chinese Research (CCR) at the University of British Columbia serves as a pivotal hub for scholarly inquiry into China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and the broader Chinese-speaking world. CCR advances multidisciplinary research in areas such as history, culture, political science, law and business, enhancing Chinese studies at UBC and beyond through international scholarly collaboration and opportunities including the Tuum Est Fellowship. The Centre’s role extends beyond academic circles, fostering connections with policy-making bodies, international partners, business communities, and local stakeholders in Canada and globally.

CCR supports UBC’s leading Sinologists and researchers by providing resources, facilitating scholarly exchanges, and hosting visiting academics. It fosters connections with policy-makers, international partners, and local stakeholders, and enriches academic life through events, conferences, and lectures. The Centre also integrates Chinese studies into broader dialogues to promote cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.

CCR is one of five regional centres under the Institute of Asian Research at UBC.

CCR seeks to provide a welcoming home for scholars studying China and the world. It is inspired by the policy prescriptions of Zhang Zai: To ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth. To secure life and fortune for the people. To continue lost teachings for past sages. To establish peace for all future generations. 為天地立心,為生民立命,為往聖繼絕學,為萬世開太平
