Established in 1993, the Centre for Korean Research (CKR) is Canada’s oldest research centre dedicated to Korean studies. It was founded to advance, coordinate, and facilitate research on Korea at the University of British Columbia (UBC) through multidisciplinary approaches. Its objectives include intensifying UBC’s focus on Korean and Canada-Korean issues by developing funded research projects, organizing seminars, workshops, lectures, and conferences, and facilitating scholar exchanges. The Centre also aims to expand opportunities for graduate students and serve as a forum for interaction between UBC and the Korean-Canadian community.

CKR engages with UBC scholars, the campus community, the Vancouver-area Korean-Canadian community, and the global Korean Studies community. Over the past three decades, CKR has hosted international conferences, including conferences in which delegates from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea participated. Some of those conferences have resulted in the publication of multi-edited volumes examining the politics, economy, and society of contemporary Korea. CKR has also sponsored many visiting scholars from South Korea, strengthening Canada-ROK ties and fostering collaborative research.

CKR is one of five regional centres under the Institute of Asian Research at UBC.
