With eleven countries and nearly 700 million people, Southeast Asia is a rich and complex part of the world. The Centre for Southeast Asia Research (CSEAR) is the focal place at UBC for students and faculty to hold interdisciplinary discussions about this critically important region. CSEAR supports a wide range of events and collaborative research projects which engage deeply with the history, culture, and contemporary politics of these diverse societies.

The Centre’s current work builds on a rich legacy that began with its foundation in July 1992. Since then CSEAR has been the only academic institute in Canada exclusively devoted to studying Southeast Asia. The Centre maintains dynamic connections with academics and educators from ASEAN countries and has played an instrumental role in shaping Canada-Southeast Asia relations over the years. It is also where Southeast Asians in the Vancouver area can become acquainted with academic studies about the region and contribute their own views to ongoing debates about its past, present, and future.

CSEAR is one of five regional centres under the Institute of Asian Research at UBC.
