| 001 | 2 | In-Person | Seminar | F | 14:00 - 17:00 | Lin, Alex Yu-ting | Public NotesSeats in the course are reserved for MPPGA students until August 16, 2025. The global economy and global politics are currently in a period of immense change. For over half a century, the international system was dominated by the US and other Western states. Yet there has recently been a significant shift of global economic activity from the Global North to the Global South, with major developing countries – such as “the BRICS” (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) – emerging as key players in the world economy. Along with their growing economic might, the emerging powers are increasingly asserting themselves in global politics and demanding a greater role in global governance. This transformation has been identified as one of the most important in modern history and prompted considerable debate in academic and policy circles around the world about the agendas of the emerging powers and the consequences of their rise. This course examines the role and impact of emerging powers in the international system. It begins by analyzing the politics, economics, and foreign policy objectives of these countries. It then turns to assessing the sources and nature of contemporary power shifts and their implications for a variety of different areas of global politics and governance, including security, human rights, environment, trade, finance, and development. |

In this class, we will critically reflect on the intersections of memory, power and justice in the aftermaths of political violence such as war, genocide, state repression, slavery and settler colonialism. We will map the emergence of, and urgency placed on, memory and transitional justice in recent decades. What is the work of memory in seeking to correct historical wrongs and to insist on a just future? What is the responsibility of the witness? How are victims and perpetrators delineated, and responsibility assigned? What are the challenges and possibilities of documenting, curating and narrating difficult histories and knowledge in public sites of memory such as memorials, museums and exhibitions? What new social and political worlds are imagined and crafted through the work of memory? We will explore these questions through the concepts of collective memory, testimony, witnessing, post-memory, feminism, transitional justice, and freedom. |

| J_001 | 1 | In-Person | Seminar | M | 09:30 - 12:30 | Byers, Michael | Public NotesThis course is reserved for MPPGA students until Aug 16th, 2025 Course Description: Outer space is becoming a very busy place. More satellites were launched in the last six years than in the previous six decades. China and the U.S. are in a new space race. Russia is testing anti-satellite weapons. And tough issues of international law and politics are emerging. Who owns outer space? Can a single company occupy entire orbits by filling them with thousands of satellites? Could China establish a mine on the Moon and instruct other actors to stay away? Who is responsible for protecting the environment in outer space? Who is responsible for keeping the peace? Could the U.S. put missile-defence interceptors in orbit, and what consequences might this have? |

The transformation is shaped by economics and engineering, as well as the institutional and legal framework that shape energy systems and markets. The goal of this course is to understand how energy in the form of electricity and heat is produced, transported, traded, and consumed. And how new technologies from solar photovoltaics to batteries to hydrogen are changing the economics of the sector as they replace coal, oil, and natural gas. With this economic foundation, coupled with perspectives from real-world applications, and perspectives from related disciplines, this course will enable students to sharpen their ability to understand, evaluate, and critique energy economics. |

The course will introduce to students the main methods and programs for visualizing data and the key aspects a reader should focus on in order to evaluate visualized information. Weekly discussions, presentations, debates, and role-playing games will give students the opportunity to understand the needs of diverse audiences, such as in international organizations and different levels of government. Guest speakers from different disciplines and organizations will showcase the various needs for data visualization in the policy field and give an opportunity to students to ask questions and network. An additional focus of the course will be on misinformation and the manipulation of data, equipping students with the necessary tools to evaluate data and their visualization methods. |
