2023 IAR Research Travel Grants Awarded

The Institute of Asian Research at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs is pleased to announce that a total of $27,000 has been awarded through the 2023 IAR Research Travel Grant program. This funding supports UBC graduate students in their pursuit of research and knowledge about the diverse issues related to Asia.

Projects supported cover travel expenses for important fieldwork happening around the globe. This year, UBC graduate students awarded this grant will be conducting research in 14 different countries. Locations include the bustling urban centres of Tokyo and Seoul, the shores of the Mekong River on the border between Thailand and Laos, and various locations throughout India, Mongolia, Bangladesh and China. Topics being researched touch on the racialization of labor, water governance, transnational migration, AI and robotics, gender-based violence, and much more.

IAR is pleased to support a diverse group of talented students from faculties across the university including History, Sociology, Political Science, Film Studies, Geography and others. This initiative will not only provide valuable opportunities for the student recipients to conduct research, but also contribute to the advancement of knowledge and understanding of Asia.

We would like to congratulate all the recipients and wish them the best of luck in their research endeavors.
