GPP 591N Special Topics in Public Policy – Power & Practice

Andrea Reimer course promo

Andrea Reimer, a newly appointed Adjunct Professor of Practice with the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, is teaching a 1.5 credit Power & Practice course this fall at UBC.

The course will entail six three-hour studio sessions. During the first four studios, students will explore their awakening to a commitment to create a more just and equitable world, gain insight into successful approaches to engaging public officials and others who can assist them as they work to implement their vision, and gain an understanding of the practice of power and how it plays out in their daily interactions as a policy-maker or practitioner in their chosen field of practice.

The course will culminate in the Power Game, a role-playing exercise that teaches students about how we can effectively use our power and influence to get things done. Students will come away with a greater understanding of their own power and how to navigate the corridors of power they will walk as they implement their vision in the real world.

“During my time as a community organizer and an elected official, I so often saw great ideas fail because the people working on them didn’t understand their own power or how to use their power to move policy change forward. I was so fortunate to be awarded a fellowship to Harvard where I spent the past year with exceptional leaders learning how to help people and communities build power literacy and power competency. Now, being able to bring this work home to Vancouver through the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs to help leaders committed to solving the big social, environmental and economic challenges we face is a dream come true.”
– Andrea Reimer
