Mohamed Zayani, Visiting Fellow at the Liu Institute for Global Issues and Professor of Critical Theory at Georgetown University, delivered the keynote address at the Personalized Media and Participatory Culture Conference, which was held at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on June 29-30, 2017.
His lecture discussed the intricate relationship between politics, communication, and participatory networks in a changing Middle East and North Africa region, paying particular attention to the way information and communication technologies are reshaping the dynamics of political socialization and altering power relations within authoritarian contexts as well as during the transitional period following the 2011 Arab uprisings.
Hosted by the Media and Communications Department and the Middle East Centre at LSE, the conference focused on the intersection of online and offline cultural production and civic participation for young people, with a particular focus on the histories and methods of youth activism in the region.
Mohamed Zayani’s book Networked Publics and Digital Contention (Oxford University Press, 2015) won the Global Communication & Social Change Best Book Award, which is conferred by the International Communication Association (ICA) and the Toyin Falola Book Award, which is awarded by the Association of the Global South Studies (AGSS).
