MPPGA alumnus Brady Fox spent his summer 2016 on exchange at Waseda University in Japan. His research concerns overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia and how they are affected by China’s evolving relationship with their country of residence. Here is a reflection of his summer work experience:
This summer I concluded my run in the UBC Master of Public Public Policy program with a semester of exchange at Waseda University in Japan. There I took classes in the Asia Pacific Area Studies department, and I really appreciated the chance to balance the technical skills I developed through the MPPGA program with sharpening a regional focus on East Asia. I’ve lived and studied in Japan in the past, and so returning there for a semester was also great to brush up on my language skills just before entering the job market. Classes concluded at the end of July, and I spent August traveling throughout Japan’s major islands.
For September I’ve been lucky enough to take part in the Visiting Young Sinologists Program hosted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences in (of course) Shanghai, China. It is a 3 conference for young researchers and academics with a focus on something related to China Studies. There is representation from 30 different countries and a broad range of disciplines, from Chinese literature to economics. The program is designed to bridge the gap between researchers inside and outside of China. It consists of lectures, seminars, and research guidance from Chinese scholars. We are each producing an article for an anthology which will be published next Spring. You can hear me talk a bit more about the program in a television interview here.
It’s a huge honour to be here and I actually discovered this opportunity directly through the MPPGA program at UBC. My research focus concerns overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia and how they are affected by China’s evolving relationship with their country of residence. While taking Dr. Paul Evans’ Global China class in the MPPGA program, I was able to hone some of my research questions and also discovered this program. It has been a wonderful opportunity and a perfect follow up to my time in the MPPGA. While I’m genuinely a bit sad not to be returning to classes this semester, I couldn’t really ask for a better transition out of the program.

The 2016 Visiting Young Sinologists Program hosted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. It is a platform for young Sinologists to better understand China and meet scholars in the same areas.
Brady Fox created wonderful memories with students from 30 different countries and a broad range of disciplines.
