Students from UBC’s Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs program, the International Relations program, the Liu Scholars program alongside faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and staff from the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs enjoyed the opening of J.J.’s Student Corner, a student lounge at the Liu Institute for Global Issues, over lunch on November 27th, 2017. Guests heard remarks from Director Moura Quayle about the importance of spaces for students to study and meet one another.
The lounge pays tribute to Dr. Liou Jieh Jow, LLD ’96, (fondly remembered as J. J. Liou), whose generous contributions through the Liu Foundation played an instrumental role in the creation of the Liu Institute for Global Issues at UBC in 2000. Dr. Liou, who passed away at the age of 88, was a distinguished international businessman, political figure and philanthropist. He will be remembered for his lifelong commitment to international aid, to promoting cultural and educational exchanges between Taiwan and Japan, as well as for his work with parliament.
