MPPGA Alumni Spotlight on Sonia Takhar, Alumna, Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs
Policy Analyst at the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade

“In my current role as a Policy Analyst at the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, I manage relationships with key industry stakeholders, execute research and advocacy projects, and design content for events and forums. The Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs program gave me the platform to refine these skills.

After the first term in the program, I developed strong research and data analysis skills. I was able to write high quality policy briefs for executive audiences, evidence-based research reports and analyse large volumes of quantitative and qualitative data. As a policy analyst, I am regularly required to develop policy positions on behalf of our Members, create timely briefs to inform management of policy issues and distill large volumes of information into digestible memos.

The MPPGA program gave me the foundations to develop advocacy skills – both verbally and written. Working under the Director of Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations requires being able to write persuasively in a variety of different communication styles to advocate on behalf of our over 5000 Members and the business community at large.

The hands on experience and exposure to policy leaders that I gained in the MPPGA program was instrumental in helping me kick-start my career in public policy.”
