SPPGA Welcomes Faculty Members Dr. Kristen Hopewell and Dr. Matias Margulis



To begin the new year, the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs welcomed Associate Professor Kristen Hopewell, Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Global Policy, as well as Assistant Professor Matias Margulis, who is jointly appointed with the Food, Nutrition, and Health Program at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, to our academic community.

Dr. Kristen Hopewell (Ph.D., University of Michigan, 2012) specializes in international trade, global governance, industrial policy and development, with a focus on emerging powers. She is the author of Clash of Powers: US-China Rivalry in Global Trade Governance (Cambridge University Press, Forthcoming 2020) and Breaking the WTO: How Emerging Powers Disrupted the Neoliberal Project (Stanford University Press, 2016) and has published extensively in both academic journals and policy-oriented venues. Prior to entering academia, she worked as a trade official for the Canadian government and as an investment banker for Morgan Stanley.

“I’m thrilled to be joining such a vibrant, policy-oriented academic community! It’s extremely exciting to have the opportunity to work with such a fantastic group of students and colleagues,” said Professor Hopewell.

Profile Matias MargulisDr. Matias Margulis’ research and teaching interests are in global governance, development, human rights, international law and food policy. He has previously held academic positions at the University of Edinburgh, University of Stirling, University of Northern British Columbia and Max Plank Institute for the Study of Societies. In 2010-2011, he was the Cadieux-Léger Fellow at Global Affairs Canada.

In addition to his academic research, Matias has extensive professional experience in the field of international policymaking and is a former Canadian representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He has also advised the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and the Scottish Parliament and consulted for international NGOs and the Brookings Institution.

“It’s an exciting time to be joining the school. I look forward to working with our MPPGA students and sharing my academic expertise and professional experiences in global governance,” said Dr. Margulis.
