Six UBC students have been selected by the Liu Institute for Global Issues in the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs for the Simons Award in Nuclear Disarmament and Global Security. The award is funded by an endowment provided by the Simons Foundation and supports UBC students intending to undertake research on topics related to nuclear disarmament and global security.
Students will produce a research paper by May 1st, 2018. They are expected to attend any seminars, workshops and other activities related to nuclear disarmament and global security organized by the Liu Institute for Global Issues or the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. Upon satisfactory production of the paper, undergraduate and graduate students will receive awards of $1,000 and $1,500 respectively.
The selected students span a range of backgrounds and areas of interest. They are:
- Samuel Thomas Reed: Ph.D. student in Political Science; policy making regarding US ballistic missile defense
- Tommy Koh: MPPGA student; the Southeast Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty and global nuclear security
- Ruo Ran (Alice) Wang: MA student in Art History; Drawings of nuclear weapons tests conducted by the United States in the Marshall Islands in 1958
- Daniel Jacinto: Undergraduate student majoring in International Relations; Perspectives about nuclear weapons acquisition in Japan and South Korea
- Darcy Hayre: Undergraduate student majoring in Political Science; the nuclear arms race in South Asia
- Debbie McCormack: Undergraduate student majoring in Anthropology; Indigenous perspectives on nuclear weapons and militarization
