“Ontario can meet its electricity demand from renewables, so why would our governing bodies allow nuclear generating stations to jeopardize the safety of the public?”
Cassandra Jeffrey, MPPGA graduate (’20) and recipient of the 2019 Simons Award in Nuclear Disarmament and Global Security, wrote a comprehensive article analyzing Ontario’s misdirected priorities for the electricity sector and traces these to the decision making structures that are based on unsustainable and decaying frameworks.
The Simons Award in Nuclear Disarmament and Global Security is granted each year by the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) to UBC students intending to undertake research on topics broadly related to nuclear disarmament and global security. SPPGA Prof. M. V. Ramana, who is involved in selecting and mentoring these awardees, says “this is a great opportunity for students to learn about subjects that they might have otherwise not been exposed to”.
