The Institute of Asian Research in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, in the Faculty of Arts, at UBC-Vancouver invites applicants for the HSBC Chair in Asian Research which supports policy-oriented work on Asia. The position is anticipated to begin July 1, 2017 for an initial 5-year term, potentially renewable.
Selection criteria include research and teaching excellence in public policy with an empirical focus on Asia. Preference will be given to faculty members teaching in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. The Faculty of Arts is committed to addressing persistent inequities; women, visible minorities, Aboriginal persons, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities, are particularly encouraged to apply.
As the HSBC Chair is partially funded by an endowment, it is intended to complement an existing position already core-funded by the faculty member’s academic home unit. This is an internal search, open to tenured or tenure-track faculty at UBC. The Chair appointment will include some research and teaching support, along with office space in the C.K. Choi Building and administrative assistance from the Institute of Asian Research in the C.K. Choi Building. The HSBC Chair will be expected to participate in the ongoing development of the MPPGA public policy degree and the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.
The Acting Dean has asked Dr. Yves Tiberghien to chair an ad hoc advisory committee to review applications and make a recommendation on the appointment of the HSBC Chair.
How to Apply:
Those interested in applying are asked to submit a CV and a brief letter of application summarizing their program of research relevant to the mandate of the HSBC Chair, including a statement about how UBC can advance the study of public policy in Asia.
Applicants need to consult with their unit head to obtain their support. The unit head would then forward the application materials to the attention of Dr. Yves Tiberghien, Director, Institute of Asian Research, by 4:00pm, Monday May 8, 2017 via email to: yves.tiberghien@ubc.ca.
