Fellowship Description
The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and practitioners. To this end, it is offering a three-month Junior Research Fellowship for applicants interested in learning more about Canada’s engagement with Asia. Applicants should be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or masters-level programs, or who have completed their degree programs within the previous 12 months. The successful applicant will be notified in November.
The Fellow will work at the Foundation’s Vancouver office and will complete work related to the Foundation’s survey of public opinion towards Asia.
Successful applicants will have the following qualifications:
• Excellent quantitative and qualitative research skills;
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
• Proficiency in STATA or SPSS, Survey Monkey, Microsoft Office software, including strong MS Excel skills.
• Experience in data analytics and visualization would be a plus.
Benefits to the Fellow
The Fellow will work under the mentorship of one or more of the Foundation’s project managers, and will engage in three types of activities:
• Analyzing data from the Foundation’s National Opinion Poll;
• Conducting background research on thematic areas that the Foundation might conduct future surveys; and
• Working under the guidance of the Foundation’s research team to produce one or more short analytical commentaries (600 – 800 words) on a topic chosen by the applicant in consultation with APF Canada staff.
Eligibility
Applicants should be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s-level program. Recent graduates may also apply as long as they have completed their degree programs no later than 12 months prior to the application deadline.
The applicant’s degree does not have to be based in Canada.
The successful applicant will be encouraged to work out of the Foundation’s head office in downtown Vancouver and be willing to contribute approximately 20-22.5 hours per week to research during regular office hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm).
Compensation
The Junior Research Fellowship grant will be for $6000. Fifty per cent of the grant will be paid upon signing of the grant agreement; the other fifty per cent will be payable upon satisfactory completion of the grant deliverables.
Start/End Dates
The successful applicant should be able to complete the fellowship from mid-December to end of March, 2017.
Application Procedures
Applications should include the following:
• Résumé detailing the applicant’s academic background (degree, major(s), awards, etc.), research skills, software/computer skills and professional experience;
• 1-page cover letter detailing the applicant’s research interests, career interests and goals, how they hope to benefit from the fellowship, and why they are interested in working in the thematic area specified in the call for applications;
• A short writing sample (no more than 15 pages double-spaced in English);
• Copy of applicant’s university transcript (scanned or electronic copies are acceptable);
• Name, title and contact information (email and phone number) for one academic or professional reference. References will be contacted only if the applicant is short-listed for the fellowship.
