Congratulations to SPPGA Associate Professor Sara Shneiderman (SPPGA; Anthropology) who was awarded a Fostering Research Partnerships Fund (FRPF) grant for her project titled, “Understanding Nepali-Canadian Experiences in BC: Immigration, Intergenerational Change, and Well-Being,” in collaboration with Dr. Rina Pradhan. The FRPF is a pilot program aimed to support and encourage early conversations between researchers and potential non-academic partners, which range from public, private to non-for-profit organizations, and facilitate collaboration.
Professor Shneiderman’s project revolves around community-engaged work with the Nepal Cultural Society of BC (NCSBC) to develop a research framework for a) exploring how Nepali immigrant families adjust to Canadian culture; b) understanding how these experiences affect the communication between immigrant parents and their Canadian-born children; and c) conducting a baseline survey of the Nepali-Canadian community in BC.
The first of four workshops was held in October 2019 with the NCSBC board. A second workshop was held in November 2019, which brought together over 30 community members in focus groups to discuss questions around immigration, intergenerational change, and well-being. Further workshops to develop the design for community-based demographic research will be held in early 2020.
