In Memoriam: IAR Founding Director Dr. Terry McGee



It is with deep sadness that the Institute of Asian Research conveys news of the passing of founding director Terry McGee on the 26th of June. Terry was a dynamic professor in the Department of Geography and a prime mover in the creation of the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) where he served as the Founding Director from 1978 to 1992, and then again from 1995 to 1998.

He is internationally renowned for his work on the urban geography of Southeast Asia and for his leadership in building UBC’s capacity for understanding and connecting to contemporary Asia. His distinctions include, but are not limited to, the 2000 Canadian Association of Geographers’ Award for Scholarly Distinction in Geography, the 2009 Laureat Prix International de Geographie Vautrin Lud; dubbed “the Nobel prize of geography, and the medal of the highest honour from the Vietnamese Government. Terry has also authored an impressive portfolio of publications throughout his career, spanning from books to academic articles. His works have received high acclaim and have solidified his lasting impact as a thought leader at the forefront of Asian urbanization research. Read more about Terry here.
