About the book: Shooting Ghosts was co-authored with U.S. Marine, Thomas Brennan, and details the unpredictability of war and its aftermath. Brennan and O’Reilly became friends during this tumultuous time, and the photographer documented not only Brennan’s experience with the war itself, but also his post-war experiences. Shooting Ghosts, written in alternating first person, details not only the tribulations of what they both experienced during the war in Afghanistan, but also their road to recovery.
Bio: Finbarr O’Reilly (BA’93) is an internationally acclaimed photographer who has spent the past decade working in Africa and the Middle East, and has won the World Press Photo of the Year, the highest individual honor in news photography. He was profiled in Under Fire: Journalists in Combat (Peabody Award winner, Oscar finalist) and has had writing fellowships at Harvard, Yale and Columbia. He was the Reuters senior photographer for Israel and the Palestinian Territories in 2014.
This event is in partnership with the Faculty of Arts, the Liu Institute for Global Issues, as part of the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, and the Department of History, UBC.
