The Centre for Japanese Research (CJR) at the University of British Columbia is dedicated to fostering understanding and collaboration between Japan and the global community. It is a vibrant hub for scholars, governmental stakeholders, and the broader community interested in Japanese studies.

CJR hosts monthly events, seminars, and workshops covering diverse topics, from Japan’s role in Indo-Pacific security to interactive kimono demonstrations. CJR supports graduate research fellows, offering opportunities for in-depth studies and conference participation, with former fellows publishing in outlets like East Asia Forum. The Centre also strengthens connections between Canada and Japan by collaborating with organizations such as the Asia Pacific Foundation and the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver, as well as supporting the promotion of initiatives such as the Japan Studies Association of Canada and the G7/G20 Youth Japan. Through its diverse events, publications, and strategic partnerships, the Centre for Japanese Research enriches academic discourse and fosters a deeper appreciation of Japan’s politics, culture, and global impact.

CJR is one of five regional centres under the Institute of Asian Research at UBC.

Japan has faced rapid growth, population aging, nuclear and energy crises and more, emerging as a leader in the face of these global challenges. The Centre for Japanese Research fosters collaboration with scholars to engage in dialogue surrounding these issues while serving as a convening place for UBC students, researchers, and the larger community here in BC.
