Why Would a Pirate Ship Want Insurance?
MPPGA Professor Rashid Sumaila, Director of the Fisheries Economics Research Unit at UBC Fisheries Centre, argues that reducing poachers’ access to insurance might be one way to combat illegal fishing. Oceans running out of fish as undeclared catches add a third to official figures
According to a new study published in Nature, the global catch of fish is decreasing three times faster than previously thought, and it’s because the oceans are running out of fish. Dr. Rashid Sumaila, MPPGA Faculty and UBC Fisheries Economics Unit Director, said that the solution to this is to end subsidies to big fishing companies.
