The Liu Institute for Global Issues invites applications for the UBC-Yale Fox International Fellowship Program.
Background:
The Fox International Fellows Program is designed to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries by promoting international scholarly exchanges and collaborations among the next generation of leaders. To accomplish this goal, the program seeks to identify and nurture those students who are interested in harnessing scholarly knowledge to respond to the world’s most pressing challenges. Award Amount:
Yale University will cover expenses directly with UBC-Yale Fox Fellows for one year starting in September of each year including:
- one round-trip coach airfare
- housing
- health insurance and
- stipend to cover living expenses equivalent to Yale graduate students registered in the social sciences and humanities at Yale University.
UBC-Yale Fox Fellows will be responsible for continuing their pre-existing fee arrangements with The University of British Columbia.
There is no funding to cover any expenses for dependents.
Eligibility:
Graduate-level students pursuing Doctoral or Master’s level degrees are eligible. If you graduate within the year of the Fox Fellowship, you may complete the year at Yale. Graduating bachelors’ level students of unusual merit and distinction may be considered but graduate-level students are preferred.
The UBC-Yale Fox Fellowships are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.
Each student nominated as a UBC Yale Fox and Fulbright Fellow shall have the approval of his/her academic supervisor.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Personal characteristics. The candidate must demonstrate commitment to serious research and also capacity for leadership and civic engagement in the larger community.
- Field of focus. A strong and specific research project with a focus in business and finance, economics, political science, international relations, law, environmental policy, public health, social sciences and contemporary history, with preference for topics of contemporary, applied and/or institutional relevance to enhancing the world’s peace and prosperity. The candidate’s overall program of studies or degree may come from different disciplines and departments as long as their project focuses on one or more of these fields.
- Language skills. The candidate’s language skills must be sufficient both to succeed in their research project and to engage in the intellectual and social community. Candidates for Fox Fellowships at Yale University must demonstrate high skills in English conversation, reading and writing.
Application Procedures:
- Applicants must download, complete and sign the UBC Yale Fox Fellows Application Form. Applicants may choose to apply solely to the UBC-Yale Fox Fellows Program.
- UBC Yale Fox Fellows may also be eligible to request additional support for pre-approved research travel expenses relevant to their Fox Fellows research projects. The process for claiming expenses and payment of monies to UBC-Yale Fox Fellows will be done directly between Yale and individual students.
- Curriculum vitae
- Official transcript of current relevant degree program to be mailed to the Liu Institute.
- Recent TOEFL or IELTS scores if applicable (applicants with a degree from university outside Canada in which English is not the language of instruction must present evidence of competency prior to an offer of admission).
- One essay, up to three pages in length, addressing the specific research plan and how it fits with the goals and fields of interest of the Fox Fellowship.
- One essay, up to three pages in length, addressing experience and plans to fulfill the Fox Fellowship goal of fellows serving as citizen-ambassadors, displaying leadership and interpersonal skills to promote peace and prosperity in the future.
- Two letters of reference from relevant faculty at the University of British Columbia who can comment on your research and studies as well as your commitment to leadership and service in the context of the Fox Fellowship’s overall goals.

Applications are due January 16th, 2017 for UBC-Yale Fox Fellows.

UBC-Yale Fox Fellows will be appointed Visiting Affiliated Research Students in the Division of Special Registration for non-degree study by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale University.
The Yale University Coordinator shall be responsible for providing visa support documents, as well as suitable housing and health insurance.
Yale University will assist UBC-Yale Fox Fellows on how to identify and engage faculty advisors and other sources of expert advice. Yale University will provide the Fox and Fulbright Fellows with access to the resources of public and university libraries, laboratories, and archives necessary to their scientific and scholarly work.
UBC-Yale Fox Fellows shall be responsible for continuing their pre-existing fee arrangements with The University of British Columbia.
Each student nominated as a UBC-Yale Fox Fellow shall have the approval of his/her academic supervisor, and any other approvals normally required by the University of British Columbia, to participate in the Fox International Fellowship Program.
