Call for Applications: The 2020 Nehru Humanitarian Graduate Scholarship in Indian Studies



The Centre for India and South Asia Research (CISAR) at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, UBC, invites submissions for the 2020 Nehru Humanitarian Graduate Scholarship in Indian Studies. The annual $1,000 scholarship is offered by Dr. and Mrs. D. P. Goel to a graduate student pursuing the political, historical, economic, religious, social, or cultural study of India. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, in accordance with findings of the Adjudication Committee of the Centre for India and South Asia Research.

Recipients will be expected to attend the annual Goel Family Charitable Foundation dinner scheduled online on the evening of November 21, 2020, where the award will be given, and will have the opportunity to speak in the seminar series at the Centre for India and South Asia Research. The winner of the 2020 award will be announced in early November.

All students pursuing an MA or PhD at UBC-Vancouver are eligible for this  award. Applicants must submit the following as not more than three separate PDFs by 4pm on Friday, October 16, 2020:

  • A statement of no more than 1000 words on the questions, objectives, methods and significance of your graduate research work focusing on India. You may submit a research and writing project that is already underway or a project that you propose to conduct. Be sure to include in this statement a budget that indicates how you intend to use the funds. This document can also include only one additional page for references, notes, and citations.
  • A copy of your (unofficial) UBC
  • A current C.V.

Submissions should be sent to Karen Jew at karen.jew@ubc.ca (cc: cisar.iar@ubc.ca) with the following subject line: Nehru Award, YOUR PREFERRED NAME. Please include your preferred name in all document file names.

Submissions will be judged by an interdisciplinary panel of UBC faculty and will be assessed for clarity, rigor, and originality. Please be sure to avoid jargon that may be unintelligible to an interdisciplinary panel of readers.
