IAR and the UBC China Council held a discussion roundtable with Ambassador John McCallum, just before his settlement in Beijing, as Canada’s new Ambassador to China. This briefing session was part of Ambassador’s McCallum’s Canada tour to hear opinions of experts and Canadians from all walks of life on where the Canada-China relations should go.
Topics covered in the UBC briefing involved: the state of Chinese politics, security issues, educational reforms in China, and trade negotiations and opportunities for Canada. This first meeting initiates a regular dialogue between UBC and the Ambassador.
The Ambassador then met with President Santa Ono and Vice President Philip Steenkamp. He reported his interest in tapping UBC’s wealth of expertise in China.
