Liu Institute Research Fellow and Georgetown University Professor Mohamed Zayani has been awarded the 2017 “Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award” from the US National Communication Association (NCA) for his book Networked Publics and Digital Contention (Oxford UP, 2015).
The accolade is the fourth prize the book received. Professor Zayani was previously awarded the “Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology Book Award,” from the American Sociological Association (ASA); “the Global Communication and Social Change Best Book Award,” from the International Communication Association (ICA), and “the Toyin Falola Book Award,” from the Association of Global South Studies (AGSS).
“Mohamed Zayani’s book is attracting a great deal of attention,” commented Dr. Moura Quayle, Director pro tem of the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. Manuel Castells, Wallis Annenberg Chair of Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, described Zayani’s Networked Publics and Digital Contention as “a major contribution to the understanding of social movements of the digital age.”
The latest prize the book reaped is awarded by the Applied Communication Division of the NCA, and honors a book that makes significant contributions in applied communication theory and research. The award will be conferred at the NCA’s 103rd Annual Convention, which will be held this year in Dallas, Texas.
Networked Publics and Digital Contention, which features a foreword by John D.H. Downing, was published as part of the Oxford Studies in Digital Politics Series, edited by Andrew Chadwick. “That Zayani’s book won multiple awards, from different associations, attests not just to the impact of his work, but also its breadth,” said Oxford University Press editor Angela Chnapko. “It is a great achievement.”
Zayani’s works include Bullets and Bulletins: Media and Politics in the Wake of the Arab Uprisings (with Suzi Mirgani; Oxford University Press, 2016). His forthcoming book Digital Middle East: State and Society in the Information Age, also by Oxford University Press, will be released in 2018.
“The Liu Institute’s research has included issues related to new technologies and governance, and Zayani’s award-winning work is a commendable contribution to this area,” noted the interim Research Director of the Liu Institute for Global Issues, Dr. M.V. Ramana. “Having Professor Zayani as a research fellow with the Liu Institute for Global Issues in the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs has been very valuable.”
