Meet Thea Bracewell, SPPGA Policy Practitioner Fellow

SPPGA is pleased to introduce Thea Bracewell as a Policy Practitioner Fellow for the Fall 2022 Term. Thea is currently a Senior Policy Analyst with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, where she is the lead on advancing gender equality and mainstreaming Gender-based Analysis Plus within Canada’s Settlement and Integration Sector. With over fourteen years of professional experience advancing gender equality issues locally and globally, we are thrilled to have Thea join SPPGA as a visiting fellow.

We sat down with Thea to ask her a few questions about her passion for policy, and how this relates to her engagement with SPPGA and the UBC community during her fellowship.

What has been a meaningful moment in your career that underscores the need for good public policy?

Gender equality gains are fragile and constantly at risk of being rolled back. Good public policy, informed by rigorous and disaggregated data, is critical to advancing this human rights issue. I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to contribute to this important global movement throughout my career, both internationally and nationally. I see, hear, read about, and also experience the reality of gender inequality  – I’m always learning – but what I know to date is the importance of data, evidence, as well as a diversity of experiences and views to create meaningful, sustainable change.

What are you most looking forward to engaging in as an SPPGA Policy Practitioner Fellow?

As an SPPGA Policy Practitioner Fellow, I’m most looking forward to engaging with students and faculty on research and topics of mutual interest, as well as the opportunity to further explore gender and migration policy.
