On June 17, 2022, the Word Trade Organization (WTO) concluded a deal on ending fisheries subsidies at the Twelfth Ministerial Conference (MC12) in Geneva, Switzerland. The new WTO agreement bans government subsidies to curb overfishing, avoid illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fisheries, and prevent the rise of new harmful subsidies.
