The School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) congratulates University of British Columbia graduate students Prerna Gupta and Alice Guimaraes who are recipients of the 2022 Olav Slaymaker Scholarship in Environment.

Scholarships have been endowed by The Simons Foundation and UBC in recognition of Dr. Olav Slaymaker’s contributions to research on environmental issues. They are awarded to graduate students pursuing environmental studies who are supervised by a faculty member appointed in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.

  • Prerna Gupta is a student in Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at UBC who is studying what makes for the acceptance or rejection of nuclear energy in India.
  • Alice Guimaraes is a student in the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at UBC who is studying the mitigation and management of water risks in mining in Canada and Indonesia.

SPPGA Professor M. V. Ramana states: “The environment, broadly conceived of, is a key focus area at SPPGA and we look forward to the results of the research that Prerna and Alice are engaged in. SPPGA is grateful to The Simons Foundation for supporting this work.”
