The Office of Regional and International Community Engagement (ORICE) Joins SPPGA

The Office of Regional and International Community Engagement (ORICE) has joined the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) as a Partner of the school.

Led by Director Tamara Baldwin, ORICE has a university-wide mandate, and is committed to overcoming complex social and ecological challenges in collaboration, with an impressive network of community partners in Canada and around the world.

ORICE has specialized knowledge and a robust track record in experiential learning pedagogy and facilitation, with a core mandate of delivering cross-disciplinary academic and co-curricular programming, such as the International Service Learning (ISL) Program, regionally-based community engagement, and UBC courses that bring community partners and their current areas of focus into the classroom.

ORICE and SPPGA will build on each unit’s strengths and engage in various ways:

  • Global Affairs: ORICE has a strong record of engagement and scholarship in global affairs, with activities oriented to international development, social justice and community-led engagementand a particular emphasis on undergraduate students.
  • Cross-campus, interdisciplinary operational model: ORICE activities are centered on community-led initiatives and cross-campus, interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Growth and impact: SPPGA serves as a valuable organizational platform to leverage, refine and expand ORICE’s impact, both locally and globally.

ORICE has existed in various forms at UBC since 2009, and has been located within the Dean of Arts office since 2016. ORICE offices are and will continue to be physically located in Mary Bollert Hall at UBC Vancouver.
