Description of the project:
Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, the TLFF Secretariat coordinates the loans and grants components of the fund and is managed by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). Working with support of the Indonesian Government, ADM capital and BNP Paribas, this is the first purely private sector landscape financing facility of this scale. Through long-term funding not previously available to smallholders and improved coordination of commercial entities and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the TLFF will help improve rural livelihoods through four main project areas: rural access to energy, land restoration, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture. Figure 1 visualizes the structure of the TLFF.
The TLFF aims to pair up commercial entities with CSOs. The corporate partner gets the loan and pays it back, while the CSO partner gets the grant and makes sure that the environmental and social impact foreseen in the project is achieved.
The UBC Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs student team are currently working with the Secretariat of the Tropical Landscapes Finance Facility (S-TLFF) towards the successful initiation of the TLLF by researching environmental and social standards, contributing to the monitoring and evaluation framework for funded projects, and identifying opportunities and risks by conducting surveys and interviews with key stakeholders.
