Why Ontario Must Rethink Its Nuclear Refurbishment Plans

In his two-part articles published with The Conversation, SPPGA Professor Ramana examines Ontario’s continued reliance on nuclear power, despite the availability of cheaper, sustainable alternatives. Part one finds that the bulk of province’s electricity demands can be met with solar, wind and hydropower, rendering the need for nuclear power unnecessary. As Ontario is set to implement expensive nuclear reactor refurbishment plans, part two examines the economic implications behind refurbishment. Ramana argues that “investing in old energy generation facilities moves us away, not towards, such a transition and locks consumers into high electricity costs for decades”.
