Binoy Mascarenhas is an urban planner and economist with over 15 years of experience across sustainability, transportation, and analytics. He served as the interim Director of Urban Innovation Research at UBC’s Sustainability Hub, where he provided direction to sustainability research while also managing UBC’s Campus as a Living Lab program that enables the use of the university campus as a testbed for innovation and demonstrative research.

Before moving to Canada in 2019, Binoy served as the Head of Urban Transport at the India office of the World Resources Institute – a globally renowned organization working at the intersection of social, economic and environmental sustainability. Binoy led a number of diverse transportation planning and design projects, including Bus Rapid Transit, Transit Oriented Development, and walking & biking infrastructure. Binoy was the WRI India-lead in the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety, working closely with organizations such as The World Bank and The World Health Organization in road safety initiatives across India, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Binoy is a co-founder of Equal Streets, which was Mumbai’s first weekly car-free day patronized by over 5000 walkers and cyclists every Sunday.

Binoy started his career in transportation data analytics for a leading third-party logistics provider in North America. He holds two Master’s degrees in urban-regional planning and economics. He has taught a course on urban economics at a leading Indian university, as well as held guest lectures at 2 other universities in India.
