MPPGA Professor Julian Dierkes is Associate Professor and Keidanren Chair in Japanese Research in UBC’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA). Dr. Dierkes will be responsible for providing academic leadership in the area of graduate student funding, including overseeing policy, adjudication, and decision-making for centrally-administered awards and scholarships, liaising with external agencies and donors, promoting student success in award competitions, and supporting programs in their responsibilities related to student financial support.

MPPGA professor Rashid Sumaila wins Volvo Environment Prize
Dr. Rashid Sumaila, Professor with the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, has won the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize for his innovative work in fisheries economics and sustainable governance of ocean resources. His research covers all aspects of the future health of the oceans: overfishing, oil spills, plastics pollution, ocean acidification, and climate change.

Paul Evans Named as Interim Research Director at IAR

MPPGA Professor Rashid Sumaila has won the prestigious Peter Benchley Ocean Award in recognition of his work on sustainable fisheries around the world. Dr. Sumaila is the recipient in the 2017 “Excellence in Science” category, which is given to an individual who “has advanced the cause of understanding ocean processes, marine ecology and conservation biology.”

Dr. Rashid Sumaila has been appointed as a Hokkaido University Ambassador from 2016-2019. Dr. Sumaila has an international reputation in the economics, environmental and fisheries fields. He is at the forefront of producing knowledge and data about the status and trends in global fisheries.
